Off To A Great Year...

What a successful first five weeks we've had!  We've begun using the Houghton Mifflin series for reading. We have been reading adventure stories for the past three weeks.  We're about to wrap up our first reading theme with a focus on poetry.

We've also been learning a lot about place value in math.  We've learned to compare numbers, we've worked with numbers up to the ten-thousands place, and we've even completed a couple BCR's!

It's so hard to believe that we are halfway through the first quarter.  For the months of August and September, we have been focusing on the character trait of "respect."  The students participated in a few different activities to learn about respect.  During the second week of school, students worked together to create a respect puzzle.  The puzzle pieces were decorated with their ideas about how respect looks at home, at school, and in the community, as well as how respect feels and sounds.  Today the students worked together to put a different respect puzzle together.  They worked in groups to teach each other about different aspects of respect.  All of this has definitely paid off!  We are consistently showing respect to each other and ourselves.

It has been such a great year so far.  I am very excited about what's to come...

  1. Hi All and thank you Ms. Van Sickle, for creating this site. It's a very nice communication tool. I've heard so much about Bella and Ben and the class already and I look forward to reading about the wonderful things that occur this school year.
